How it works
Reduces a pixel size to its ratio (for example 16:9) and calculates the missing dimension when resizing while keeping that ratio. Useful for video, images, thumbnails, and responsive design.
Formula
ratio = width ÷ gcd(width, height) : height ÷ gcd · new height = new width × height ÷ width
Example
1920 × 1080 simplifies to 16:9. Scaled to 1280 wide, the height is 720.
Frequently asked questions
Which ratios are most common?
16:9 for video and screens, 4:3 for classic formats, 1:1 for social media, and 9:16 for vertical video.
Why doesn't my size match a well-known ratio?
Many resolutions are approximations, e.g. 1366 × 768 is nearly 16:9 but not exact.
