How it works
Solves the three most common percentage questions: what a percentage of an amount is, what percentage one number is of another, and what remains after raising or lowering an amount by a percentage.
Formula
x% of y = y × x ÷ 100 · x is (x ÷ y × 100)% of y
Example
15% of 240 is 36. And 36 is 15% of 240. If you raise 240 by 15%, you get 276.
Frequently asked questions
How do I work out a percentage in my head?
Find 10% by moving the decimal one place, then adjust: 5% is half of that, 20% is double.
Why doesn't +20% then −20% return the original?
Because each percentage applies to a different base. 100 + 20% = 120, and 120 − 20% = 96.
