How it works
Measures how much a value has risen or fallen relative to the original, as a percentage. The sign shows direction: positive for an increase, negative for a decrease. It is undefined when the starting value is zero.
Formula
change % = (final value − initial value) ÷ initial value × 100
Example
From 80 to 100 is +25%. From 100 to 80 is −20%: the same 20-unit step weighs differently depending on the starting point.
Frequently asked questions
What's the difference between percentage points and percent?
If a rate goes from 2% to 3%, it rises 1 percentage point, but the relative change is +50%.
What if the starting value is 0?
It cannot be calculated, since it would divide by zero. The tool lets you know.
