How it works

From cost and selling price it calculates profit, margin, and markup. They are often confused: margin is measured against the selling price and markup against cost, which is why markup is always the larger of the two.

Formula

profit = price − cost · margin = profit ÷ price × 100 · markup = profit ÷ cost × 100

Example

Cost €60, price €100: profit €40, margin 40%, and markup 66.67%.

Frequently asked questions

I want a 30% margin: how much do I add to cost?

Not 30%. With cost 70 and price 100 you get a 30% margin, which equals a 42.9% markup.

Can margin be negative?

Yes, if you sell below cost. Profit and margin then come out negative.
